Here are the answers to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions about this workshop. If you have questions that are not presented below, please contact us at cytosimworkshop@ncsu.edu.
- For whom is this workshop?
This workshop is for anyone interested in learning how to use CytoSim to create computer models of cytoskeletal systems: undergraduates or faculty, biologists or mathematicians. If you are not sure if this is suitable for you, feel free to contact us!
- Is there a registration/participation fee?
No, there is no fee to register nor to participate in the workshop. Participants are expected to pay for their travel and lodging expenses. There are a a few recommendations and options that we provide for lodging nearby.
- What is the deadline for registration?
The deadline to register is April 10. Because space is limited, we will notify applicants by early April of their status to attend the workshop.
- Where will the lectures be held?
All lectures and hackathon sessions will take place in Riddick Hall room 314, located on the campus of NC State in Raleigh, North Carolina. Classes will start at 9am and end at 5pm, with coffee breaks in the morning/afternoon and an 1 hour lunch break at noon (food will be provided).
- Do I need to know how to program?
No previous programming experience is required, but we expect participants to be comfortable with basic computer usage.
- Do I need to bring my own laptop?
Yes, we prefer that all participants bring their own laptop as we have only a limited number of spare laptops to lend.
- In which operating system (OS) does CytoSim work?
CytoSim works very well on Linux and Mac laptops. It also works on Windows systems, but the installation on it is a little bit more challenging, so we recommend using/bringing a laptop that uses Linux/Mac if possible.
- Do I need to install CytoSim before the workshop?
Yes, but we will help you. We will hold a Zoom session a week before the workshop to help all participants install CytoSim on their laptops. The date and time will be announced as we get closer to the start of the workshop.
- Will there be coffee?
Yes, there will be free coffee during the breaks, along with some light snacks!
- Will there be lunch and dinner?
A light lunch (pizza, sandwiches, etc) will be provided to all participants, along with drinks and more coffee. Dinner will be your own responsibility. There are a lot of restaurants near Riddick Hall, especially along the Hillsborough Street which has a wide variety of dining options within walking distance of the workshop.
- Is there an online participation option?
Unfortunately we do not have the capabilities to offer a remote participation option at this time.
- If I use my research project in the hackathon, am I expected to add the instructors as co-authors?
Not at all. Your project is your project, we are just here to help you get the most out of your CytoSim model. We only ask you to mention/thank the CytoSim workshop in the acknowledgement section of your paper if you feel that it was helpful to you.
